Tools required for all beading classes: round nose pliers, pointy chain nose pliers and good cutters. We have a pretty good selection at the shop.  Classes must be paid for in advance unless other arrangements are made.

PAST CLASS: Bracelet and earrings: We'll be making a Carmen Miranda tutti-frutti charm bracelet using seed beads, crystals or leaf beads, and awesome Czech pressed glass fruit beads. This class involves stringing on cable and making briolette wraps on each fruit bead - excellent for practice if you aren't used to the technique. Taking the freebie wire-wrap class on Saturday morning would be helpful. Class and materials:  $25. Kits available for $20 (lots of parts in this one, the class is a swell value!).

Pearl-chain.jpg

PAST CLASS: Chain and pearl necklace with earrings. This project will feature making and using open and wrapped links for earrings, and crimping beading cable to a chain. This basic design can easily be adapted for use with gemstones and other beads - a wonderful way to create pieces using large, stunning stones without making them too heavy. This one is a real staple for the design toolbox.

PAST CLASS: Asymmetric necklace using 'trash' pearls, seed beads, and assorted glass beads. We'll be using a glass window pendant to finish off this great piece. This class involves plenty of guided design work and will get you familiar with detailed patterned stringing.

Cord-key.jpg

PAST CLASS: Knotting with Cord, with Jake and Ben. The guys are calling this one the 'Add-a-Bead Change-a-Bead' knotting project. This is an adjustable necklace on cord with a skeleton key (the real thing, and new to us) and the option to change out the bead whenever you wish. Instructions will cover the creation and use of sliding barrel knot closures - a tricky but incredibly versatile technique.

Earring_trio.jpg

PAST CLASS: Earring workshop: Three different, fabulous pairs of earrings. This is an opportunity to refresh your understanding of closed ring, wrapped loop and briolette wrap techniques. Materials include 'Pringles' metal disk beads, blister pearls, bead caps and an assortment of stone and glass beads.

Brass_necklace.jpg

Saturday, March 26, 2-4: Using our new brass elements and chain, make a necklace and earrings. A chance to practice integrating wire and beads into chain to create a stylish set!

Wire_knot_necklace.jpg

Saturday April 2, 2-4:  Taught by Ben, assisted by Jake. We will be creating a button-closure necklace around a pewter replica of an antique pendant featuring Durga, a wonderful deity from the Hindu pantheon who is commonly invoked for protection. This class will introduce a technique which is a Nomad specialty, called the wire knot. We will be using these versatile, sleek, and very secure knots to finish the necklace and add a button closure, as well as isolate the pendant in the center. This is a great opportunity to learn a very uncommon and special method of finishing pieces strung on cord.

Saturday classes

Nomad offers two free beading basics sessions each Saturday:

10-11:30: WIRE WRAP BASICS. Class covers tool discussion, wire discussion, and wrapped-loop technique, a foundation skill used in earrings, rosaries and in making wrapped links for all manner of applications.

11:30-1:00: STRINGING BASICS. Class will work with beading cable and with crimps, learning the skills necessary to finish a basic necklace or bracelet. There is usually some flex time in this session to discuss additional technique, such as stretch bracelets or design principles.

Please be prompt! The table we work at can accommodate five people per session, and we're running on a first come, first served basis. Our instructor will do her best to catch people up mid-session if necessary, but it's far easier to learn what we have to teach when the whole group is working at roughly the same point.

If you'd like to tackle a more advanced technique beyond the basics covered in these sessions, please let us know! We are eager for feedback on additional classes we should offer, and we also host individually-instructed lessons at $25 an hour.
